When it comes to coffee in Yogyakarta, the options are endless. From local coffee to premium blends, there is a place for every coffee lover. In May 2018, Thon’s Coffee opened its doors in the Seturan area of Yogyakarta, offering a wide selection of coffee to satisfy the cravings of the Gudeg City.

Open from 8:30 am to 12:30 am (last order at midnight), Thon’s Coffee specializes in specialty coffee sourced directly from Expat Coffee Roastery in Bali. “Our focus here is on the coffee, as we use carefully selected beans from Expat that guarantee both taste and quality. We also use high-tech equipment, such as automatic machines, to ensure consistency in flavor,” says Viona Santoso, one of the owners of Thon’s Coffee.

Currently, Thon’s Coffee offers four types of single-origin coffee: Kintamani, Columbia, Brazil, and West Java. The brewing method used is mainly V60, but there are plans to expand the selection of brewing equipment and coffee beans in the future.

In addition to the imported coffee from Bali, Thon’s Coffee also offers homemade desserts made by the owners themselves. Every day, visitors are treated to a variety of freshly baked desserts, as they are made in the kitchen located on the second floor of the building.

“The most unique dessert we offer is our roll cake, which has a soft texture unlike traditional sponge cakes. Our customers’ favorite is the cake selection, which includes dark chocolate, matcha, and our newest addition, cappuccino cake, which contains espresso,” Viona explains.

For those interested, Viona also accepts custom dessert orders with a minimum of 24 hours notice. The price for a 28cm diameter cake is Rp 300,000, while a cheese cake with a diameter of 26 cm is priced at Rp 300,000. The flavors, colors, and decorations can be customized according to the customer’s preference. Every Friday, fresh cheese cake and Expat cold brew are always available. So, for those who want to try Expat’s cold brew, it is recommended to visit on Fridays and Saturdays, as the cold brew is usually sold out by Monday.

Expat was chosen as the main coffee supplier for Thon’s Coffee due to its reputation as an award-winning roastery, ensuring excellent quality and taste. The name “Thon’s Coffee” is derived from the nickname of the owner, Anthony Santoso, who is also Viona Santoso’s husband.

In addition to coffee and homemade desserts, Thon’s Coffee also offers a selection of herbal teas that are unique compared to others. The choices include lemongrass, lavender, and chamomile. With a total seating capacity of 80 people, including a smoking area on the terrace for 20 people, the place is quite spacious. Guests can enjoy their coffee comfortably without worrying about overhearing conversations from other tables. The Wi-Fi connection is also reliable, making Thon’s Coffee a great place to study or work. The price range at Thon’s Coffee starts from Rp 18,000 to Rp 32,000 for coffee, while desserts can be enjoyed starting from Rp 10,000 to Rp 20,000.

Thon’s Coffee is not just a place to enjoy a cup of coffee or indulge in delicious desserts. It is a place that offers a unique experience and a cozy ambiance. With its wide variety of coffee options and homemade desserts, Thon’s Coffee is a must-visit for coffee enthusiasts in Yogyakarta.
